Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. When she was a young girl Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to the word association. Ford started to become attracted to acting at the age of teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of days, she realized that Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place right for her. Ford, instead of applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot at the third time made an application and secured acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of Ford's classmates. Ford's television debut was in the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV shows such including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Alongside her usual performances in the theatre, Tate also joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedies that were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
